Customer Care/Member Identification Program (Care/MIP)

To qualify for participation in the Bureau's Customer Care/Membership Identification Program, the BUSINESS must first be an approved member of the BBB. Companies who are non-profit soliciting organizations such as lobbying groups, charities, etc. cannot participate in the program. Finally, the BUSINESS must pay the appropriate program fees and agree to abide by, in addition to the standard membership requirements, the terms and conditions as set forth in a separate Care/MIP agreement.

The BUSINESS must agree that all disputes arising between it and its customers shall be submitted to binding arbitration under the Better Business Bureau's Rules of Arbitration (binding) and applicable state law. The BUSINESS therefore must agree to resolve its customer's disputes in accordance with BBB Membership Standards and applicable dispute resolution rules. This is conditioned on the fact that prior to entering the arbitration stage, the BBB's traditional conciliation and mediation attempts have been exhausted.

This program applies to disputes between the BUSINESS and its customers regarding marketplace transactions. It does not extend to disputes alleging criminal violations, wage or labor disputes, mental anguish, punitive damages, personal injuries, to disputes which may not be arbitrated under law or claims that do not directly relate to the product or service involved.

Any claim presented must be done so within one year of the transaction, or within the warranty period, whichever is longer. The agreement must be in force during the time of the transaction for any claim to be processed.

This program applies to all disputes received by the BBB up to thirty days following written notice to terminate this pledge and/or membership by either the BBB or the BUSINESS.

In consideration of the BUSINESS's commitment to arbitration, the BBB agrees to permit the BUSINESS to use the program logo or identifying statement in advertising provided that:

  • The BUSINESS must have been in business for at least one full year and to be free from any and all unresolved complaints or other matters brought to their attention by the BBB.

  • Only the BBB (1) program logo and/or (2) identifying statement be displayed, advertised or used. Display of these two marks may not be accompanied by any other language about the BBB program, the BBB or the BUSINESS affiliation with the BBB. With this, no alteration, addition or subtraction to the marks is permitted.

  • The use of the program logo or identifying statement shall be restricted for use solely in newspapers; Yellow Page directories, other directories; direct mail; business cards; stationery; fax cover sheets; invoices; business documents/contracts; periodicals; posters; billboards; flyers, TV and radio.

  • Use of a special online logo and membership statement is permissible on the Internet if the BUSINESS signs a separate BBBOnline agreement. A separate BBBOnline application addendum is available on request. For purposes of this program, use of the logo and/or identifying statement is strictly limited to BBB's geographical area of jurisdiction.
